How to care for your trees:
On arrival:
- These lemon trees will be supplied approximately 70cm - 90cm tall, in 4L nursery pots. Remove the pot and place your trees into larger containers
- Citrus trees perform best when planted into containers to allow them to be moved inside for the colder winter months, while taking in the summer conditions outside in the garden. As they are not hardy, it is not recommended to plant them directly into the ground
- When moving to a new container, try to only increase the size by 5cm at a time, with the new pot only being slightly larger than the existing rootball, while you should also avoid too much root disturbance when repotting
- An easy indicator to know plants need repotting is roots will start to appear through the holes of the base. Repotting is best done in spring using either a citrus-specific compost or a nutrient-rich, soil-based compost, mixing in roughly 20% sharp sand or grit to boost drainage
- Water citrus plants freely through summer, ideally using rainwater. Compost can dry quickly so check it daily
- When the plants are moved indoors for winter, allow the surface soil to partially dry prior to watering. Overwatering in winter can cause root rot, yellowing or even shedding of leaves
- Only minimal pruning should be needed to keep citrus trees in an acceptable shape
- Overcrowded branches and wayward shoots can be thinned in February to avoid spoiling the shape of the plant, while the tips of most vigorous shoots can be pinched across summer to encourage branching
- A Soluble Citrus Fertiliser is recommended to ensure trees can grow into large specimens and bear plenty of fruit
- Summer-specific feed can be applied from March to October, which is high in nitrogen, before switching to a more balanced winter citrus feed from November to the middle of March
- Citrus trees are not hardy, therefore need winter protection
- Bring potted citrus trees inside to a cool area when the temperature at night starts to dip in autumn
