Pearl Buying Guide

Our guide will help you decide what is the right shape, colour, lustre and type of a pearl jewellery for you. Lara Pearl jewellery is set with cultured freshwater pearls, which are formed in freshwater molluscs that are intentionally stimulated so that a pearl can grow.

Pearl Shapes

Cultured freshwater pearls come in a wide array of shapes, from classic round to eye-catching baroque. Each with a beauty all its own, these shapes define the look of the jewellery they're set in. Discover the different shapes in the guide below to find your perfect pearl.

Pearl Colours

From pretty pastels to bold shades, there are plenty of pearl colours to explore, all with iridescent hues. There are two ways that a pearl can get its colour: with dye, or naturally, which means that the pearl develops the colour itself.

Pearl Lustre

The lustre of a freshwater cultured pearl refers to the depth and quality of its shine, giving it its distinctive iridescent sheen. It is this signature quality of pearls, a high lustre that gives them their crisp, mirror-like shine.

Pearl Types

Natural pearls are formed without human intervention and cultured pearls are formed by intervening with the mollusk to stimulate pearl growth. Freshwater cultured pearls can be grown in rivers or lakes, and saltwater cultured pearls are grown in seas or oceans.

Pearl Care

When caring for your pearls, wipe them gently with a damp cloth after each wear, and for a deep clean, use mild soapy water. Pearl necklaces, pearl bracelets and pearl earrings should also be put on last and taken off first to avoid overexposure to chemicals from perfume.
