This collection of 18 Carpet Phlox young plants from Mont Rose are hardy, evergreen rockery plants with many uses around the garden, their spreading habit is useful for keeping weeds at bay; making it great for planting under trees, shrubs and tall perennials. Softens hard landscaping such as walls and paths, and adding interest to awkward slopes and banks, the natural lax habit of the Carpet Phlox, forms swathes of colour so be as artistic as you like and design a floral masterpiece in your garden.

Cultural instructions:

  • Phlox are supplied as plug plants and in order to give them the best possible start, pot them on into 7cm (2.82) pots using free-draining compost
  • Although they are perfectly hardy, the young plants should be grown on in frost-free conditions until large enough to plant outside
  • When they have a good established root ball, acclimatise them to outdoor conditions over 7 - 10 days
  • Plant 40cm (15.7") apart to create a carpet of colour
  • Once established, phlox subulata requires little attention, and only occasional watering will be necessary during dry period
  • Deadhead faded flowers to encourage more blooms to be produced
  • Prune in summer if desired, the stems can be cut back after flowering by about one third to promote fresh foliage
  • Apply a mulch of well-rotted manure to the base of the plant in the autumn
  • Plant in March onwards in frost-free conditions
