Rated 3 out of 5 by Tonkaddict It's a choice of two fan modes!
I have been a huge fan (good pun) of Dyson since my first DC02 and have the original AM01, both sizes, the AM04, AM05 and the amazing little AM06 - the upgraded version of AM01, with the remote control, timer function and even lower power consumption.
I had been sent a prototype "quiet" base a couple of years ago and was waiting for the rollout of the super-combination of new sound insulation, economy, remote control and timer. Here it was!
But it has proved to be quite a different animal to the AM04 and AM05 to which it is supposed to be the upgraded version.
The AM04/05 were noisy, yes, but they dispersed the cool or hot airflow evenly across an arc in front of the machine. To revert to the technical demos by Joe (what an enthusiastic and inspirational representative for Dyson) all 3 windmills are sent spinning, the one each side and the one directly in front. The AM09 is quite different - you have the choice of the "jet focus" mode, which gives a concentrated airflow to the front centre windmill (humn) or the "diffuse" option, which sends the airflow towards the two outer windmills and the centre one, or me in this case, is left in the calm - like the calm eye of a tornado!
I have been swapping and changing from each of my fans to check this. I even (living in a seaside resort) tried the fan test with the AM05/04 as direct comparisons, as well as my favourite AM06. No mistake. Also, increasing the airflow up to level 5 and beyond made the difference even more apparent as well as more noisy! From that level, on heating mode a sort of cool air draught became apparent if sitting in the centre on diffuse mode.
Incidentally, if you are looking, this model is not at this date, listed on the Quiet Mark 2015 directory, but the AM06 is! They need to update the listing.
So, sadly, this new beauty is only getting 3 stars from me, as it is not an upgraded version of the other two as advertised, but a totally different animal and were it promoted as a dual function fan with all the advantages of the quieter operational noise under level 5, with all the remote control functionality, oh, and you CAN operate it without the remote, off, on, heat levels as well, just not the timer function.
Beautiful design, top quality but just not as described. Needs its marketing rethought.

I purchased this as TSV so saved a huge amount of money on it (Thank you QVC) But honestly it is worth every penny of the full price its awesome! Hot or cold oscillating or directed it gives a fantastic performance, so quiet, at the lower output you can't hear it running at all, this ticks all the boxes for me. Not sure why there not being a power switch on the unit is a problem as some of the other reviewers have pointed out as disappointment to them, the remote is a neat little unit with the Dyson added touch of being magnetic so it can sit on the top of the unit when not in use, and of course it looks pretty cool too. Perfect!!

Previously have the nickel and black AM05 which blends with all equipment (PC laptop, BT speakers, Kodak printer,TV monitor and VCR) in my study. This white AM09 is for my white bedroom and is exactly as claimed in the on-air demo. My AM05 is placed about 3 ft in regular use from me and for comparison I placed both side by side. (BTW, the remote control of the AM05 also works with the AM09 but not vice versa.) A luxurious purchase but YOLO - You Only Live Once. With the AM09's enhanced performance and added features considered,it rates as a 10 for me. Ideal for the bedroom or any environment where peace is desired as it is whisper quiet. Not surprised that hospitals now use these bladeless fans.

I was surprised that a quality product from dyson relies totally on a remote control to operate it.I would have thought a on/off switch would have been added as well.If remote is lost or broken it renders it useless.

Wow all I can say is the Dyson AM09 is fabulous!! Oh so quiet.... After seeing the TSV yesterday I decided to purchase, selecting the next day delivery option. I received the AM09 earlier today and it is all what was said in the presentation and more. Just a suggestion a white socket and electrical cord would move this machine from fabulous to perfection.
I was lucky enough to have purchased and owned the AM05 Nickel Dyson. The AM05 was also a fantastic piece of machinery however was a little to nosey for me so I decided to send it back, lucky I was still within the 30 day return deadline.
Dyson you have really done yourself proud with the new AM09, well done.

This is a very powerful and effective fan that is so quiet on lower settings and perfect if you want to set the timer for 30 mins as you drop off to sleep on a warm evening!

I purchased this fan heater the last time it was a TSV. Thinking "Dyson, good make plus a considered purchase", I would have expected an of an off switch on the fan itself not just have to rely on the remote control which is not satisfactory either, as I go to turn the TV over sometimes and the fan swiches on; must be something to do with infra red. It doesn't do it all the time but has done it at least half a dozen times since I have had it. I now have to turn it off at the wall socket so that doesn't happen.
I would have thought that for the price of the fan, there should have been another way of turning the fan on and off in case the remote is lost at anytime. The cord could also do with being longer. I could therefore not recommend this product as it is a lot of money for a fan that is lacking in vital features.
