Entertainment on the go

The field of mobile media has come a long way since the days of the Walkman and portable televisions. With the advancement of technology it has become possible to cram vast amounts of information into smaller and smaller devices.

As a result of the ease of downloading music from the internet, more and more people are enjoying their tunes in a digital MP3 format either directly through their computers or by way of a portable MP3 player. Some are even enjoying pictures, television shows and films on the go using portable Digital Video Recorders (DVRs).

What is an MP3 Player?

A portable MP3 player is essentially a small data storage device with its own power source which allows you to listen to digital music stored upon it. Despite the name, MP3 players are usually compatible with other sound-file formats such as Windows Media Audio (WMA) and WAV files.

The main benefit of an MP3 player is the amount of entertainment that can be crammed into its memory. If the average music track takes up about 4 megabytes of memory, the average MP3 player's memory is usually counted in terms of gigabytes. A single gigabyte is made up of roughly 1,000 megabytes.

You could potentially carry your whole music collection with you in a handy, pocket-sized device!

What is a portable Digital Video Recorder?

Some MP3 players available can also display digital videos using an integrated LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) screen and the massive amount of hard drive storage that can now fit in a portable device.

Videos take up significantly more memory than audio tracks, as not only is there more going on, information-wise, they're also generally longer. An average movie will usually take up roughly 600 megabytes while a 20 minute TV show will need roughly 170 megabytes of memory.

Some Portable Digital Video Recorder (DVR) enable you to record video directly from a television, Sky box or DVD player as well as other sources. As well as being able to watch the play-back on its screen, most units will offer the option to view play-back through a normal television set.
