They are so comfortable (a bit unusual at first - but once you're used to them you can walk for miles in them)
MrsA, Northumberland, on Birkenstock Classic Single Strap Sandal
Your foot should fit inside the edges of the shoe with a few millimetres at the front and back of your foot. This allows for movement while walking. Your toes and heel should not touch the rim of your sandals while standing in them. The extra room is needed to perform the natural rolling motion of the foot without restrictions.
Birkenstocks offer the choice of Regular and Narrow footbeds. At QVC we offer one size option per style, with the majority being offered in the Narrow option, which is actually a generous regular UK fit. The Birkenstock Regular option is a wider-fit footbed, and is generally only offered in our toe-post sandals.
When you try on your first pair of Birkenstock shoes, take time to walk around indoors and get used to them. You should break them in gradually. The Birkenstock footbed is contoured to match the shape of a healthy foot. The toe grips should be in the right place for your feet and some wearers find the arch support can feel strange initially.
It may take several days to become used to the feeling, but your toes will soon learn to grip the footbeds as you walk. Although the footbeds may feel stiff at first they will become softer and more flexible and will adjust to the shape of your feet for a truly unique fit. Properly cared for, they will provide you with years of comfort.
