A 500-year old haircare secret

At the heart of the Ojon brand is an ancient secret hidden in the oil of the ojon tree. For over 500 years, this secret to remarkably healthy hair has been known only to the Tawira indians - 'the people of beautiful hair'.

How Ojon began

It started as a mysterious brown paste that made its way into the home of Ojon founder Denis Simioni when a relative came to visit. They left behind a small jar filled with this unusual paste, calling it an ancient remedy for damaged hair and skin.

For two years this mysterious jar sat untouched until one day Denis became curious and decided to try it. The results were instant and like nothing he had ever seen before.

His background as an experienced advertising executive in the beauty business sent him on a journey to learn everything he could about the secret oil.

His investigation into the history of ojon oil involved lengthy adventures by plane, boat and on foot. His trips into the rainforest earned him a reputation as the 'Indiana Jones of haircare'!

The Tawira people

Denis learned that the Tawira wear ojon oil in their hair all day long and use it as a body moisturiser from the day they're born.

The Tawira were proud to share all they knew about ojon oil, and they demonstrated to Denis each step in the tedious process of harvesting the nuts and extracting the oil.

Sustainable harvesting with the Tawira

In order to guarantee its purity and effectiveness, the oil in Ojon products continues to be harvested in a sustainable way and extracted by hand using traditional techniques.

Ojon works closely with the Tawira tribes and donates a portion of its profits to the people, which helps the Tawira preserve their traditional lifestyle and the region's rainforests.
