The mysterious jar

The fascinating story of Ojon started when its founder, Denis Simioni, was given a small unmarked jar by a relative. It contained a golden velvety balm reputed to have the power to restore the look of health and vitality to 'hair broken by the blazing sun.'

It sat on his shelf for two years until one day he noticed that swimming had left a relative's hair dry, brittle and unruly. He remembered the jar and was amazed by the results after using it.

Her hair was instantly and dramatically softer, smoother, and more radiant. Her brush slid through the hair strands without a snag. Denis Simioni decided to discover the secrets of this amazing formula from those who knew it best - a tribe of people from Central America.

A 500 year old tradition

The tribe demonstrated each step in their time-consuming process of extracting the elixir, which is all done by hand using traditional techniques.

After the ripe nut clusters are cut from the Ojon tree, they are stacked in the hot sun to dry. The next day, the nuts are washed in water and then softened in boiling water. They are then smashed with logs in a wooden barrel, peeled and then each nut is cracked to remove the kernels. From these kernels an elixir is extracted, which becomes a velvety paste when cooled.

Sustainability

Ojon continues to work with the tribe to help preserve their way of life and their precious rainforests in the region. They are also proud to work closely with MOPAWI, a non-profit group dedicated to promoting sustainable development in the native Miskito and Garifuna populations in the Mosquitia region of north-eastern Honduras.
